Giannitsa Sacrifice Road

Highlights

The Race Road, in honor of the Sacrifice of the victims of the German Occupation in 1944, was developed in the early 1980s, on the initiative of local Gymnasts and was established as an official event in the early 2010s.

The “Giannitsa Sacrifice Road” is organized every September by the Municipality of Pella in cooperation with the Giannitsa-O.M.G. Marathon Team and the EAS SEGAS of Central Macedonia and is also known as the Half Marathon (PELLA HALF MARATHON – 21.097,5 km).

The runners start from the pedestrian street of Giannitsa – EPON square, cross the entire city center, Venizelos – Gonou Yota square – Chatzidimitriou, continue to the historic hill “Philippio”, cross the streets with the houses of Macedonian Architecture, meet the historic church of the Metropolis (19th century), to the monument of the Battle of Giannitsa. Then they cross the center of Ambelies and with a view of Mount Paiko they reach and cross the villages of Neos Mylotopos and Axos. They return to Giannitsa and end up on the pedestrian street through the streets of 20th October – Nikiforou – Venizelos, ending at the EPON square.

The “Road of Sacrifice of Giannitsa” also includes:

– VANGELIS VRONZOS Road – Dynamic Walking – Free Running 5.5 km, a route that passes by the Mass Grave, the site of the sacrifice of the people of Giannitsa.

– Schoolchildren’s Road, Free Running & Walking 1000m

The event involves the participation of certified Health Organizations, which assist the work of the Traffic Police of Giannitsa and the Municipal Police.
