Eleftherios Venizelos (Mournies Chania, 11/23 August 1864 – Paris, 18 March 1936) was a Greek politician who served as Prime Minister of the Cretan State and of Greece. He played an important role in the Cretan Issue and in the political life of Greece from 1910 until his death in 1936.
In honour of the great politician who contributed to the liberation of Macedonia (1912-13), to the reconstruction of the region with the Exchange of Populations (1923) and the settlement of refugees, as well as to the economic development with the public project of draining the Lake of Giannitsa, the municipality of Giannitsa in cooperation with the Historical and Cultural Society of Giannitsa “Philippos” erected the brass bust. The occasion of the erection was the 70th anniversary of his death. The bust (0,75×0,50×0,35m) was created by the sculptor Efthymios Kalevras, placed in George Papandreou Square, in the pedestrian area and unveiled on 25 June 2006.
