Bust of Penelope Delta

Busts

Penelope Benaki – Delta (1874-1941), daughter of Emmanuel Benaki and Virginia Choremis, is perhaps the best-known Greek writer of historical fiction with parallel national activity during the First World War and during the rehabilitation of the refugees of the Asia Minor Catastrophe. More specifically, her novel “In the Secrets of Valtos”, set in the Lake of Giannitsa during the Macedonian War, is identified with the landscape and local memory of Pella.

On 5 June 2005, the Municipality of Giannitsa, in cooperation with the Historical and Cultural Society of Giannitsa “Philippos”, in order to honor the author, erected her bust in the small municipal park opposite the entrance of the 5th Primary School of Giannitsa. The bronze bust (0,77×0,55×0,30m) was created by the sculptor Efthymios Kalevras and placed on a 1,70m high marble pedestal.
