Aravissos Route

In the square of Pontochori

The small detour of the road of Aravissa will lead the visitor to Pontochori, a settlement with few houses and the humble church of Agios Dimitrios. A relic of other decades. In the square and without expecting it, the visitor will notice a helicopter mounted on a metal base. It was erected to pay tribute to the crew of a helicopter that crashed in February 2006 west of Giannitsa.  Its pilot, Captain Christos Karypidis, came from Pontochori.

At the Monastery of Panagia in Lakka

Heading up from the village of Lakka, on the foothills of Mount Paiko, the visitor will find the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The monastery celebrates on 15 August (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) and 21 November (Presentation of Virgin Mary).

In the bell tower of the monastery’s church there is an inscription with the year 1714. A second inscription, engraved on the outer side of the south wall, gives the year 1888, the year in which repair work was carried out. The church follows the type of a three-aisled basilica. The masonry is of strong brickwork 0,90 m thick. Inside the church, above the porch, the women’s niche is visible, decorated with a wooden parapet and a coffered ceiling. The iconostasis, the stepped windows and the Crucifixion are carved in wood.

In the monastery there is also the tree of Panagia. The tall oak is a tree of traditions and miracles. It is said that those who tried to cut its branches remained motionless. The spring that waters the monastery is also considered miraculous.
