Equestrian Statue of Alexander the Great

In the heart of the city, in the surrounding area of the Cultural Centre of Giannitsa, the equestrian statue of Alexander the Great was erected in 2009. It was sculpted by the artist Ioannis Alkeos and sponsored by the former mayor of Giannitsa, Georgios Elidis.

Alexander the Great is represented on horseback in a war uniform and horned head. In his right hand he holds a spear, while in his left hand he holds the reins of the horse. Alkeos created two equestrian statues of Alexander the Great, of Edessa and Giannitsa. In the first work Alexander the Great is represented as a visionary and peacemaker, while in the second, he is depicted as a warrior, tending more towards the case of the statue of Thessaloniki. The unveiling of the monument took place on 20 October 2009, on the day of the anniversary of the Liberation of Giannitsa (1912).
